I live just a few houses from the Todd River. Translated sometimes as Lhere Mparntwe (ler-ra m-barn-twa) in Arrernte, the course of the river runs from The Telegraph Station through the middle of Mparntwe/Alice Springs and past Ntaripe/Heavitree gap at the southern edge of town from where it continues into the western part of the Simpson Desert and into Lake Eyre. Normally completely dry, the river starts to flow around 6-8 hours after heavy rains in the catchment to the north. It can suddenly change from a waterless course to a powerful river within 15 minutes. As soon as the word goes out that the river is up locals flock to causeways to watch the caramel coloured waters charging through our town.
