During the second half of the nineteenth century Afghan and Pakistan cameleers played a critical role in bringing goods and equipment to Central Australia and settled in Alice Springs around the turn of the century. Date palms were planted wherever the cameleers spent time. This fruitful legacy can still be seen in Ntaria/Hermannsburg and around the gardens of Mparntwe/Alice Springs.

The Tamara date plantation depicted on this tea towel was established in 1991 and since 2014 has been managed by a sustainably committed co-operative, the Desert Fruit Company. Pip McManus was the lucky artist to be invited to design their date box cover for the 2022 harvest - the artist gets paid in dates!
