The contribution to world food from South America is immense: tomatoes, potatoes
among them, but perhaps no more than peppers such as chilies from the Solanaceae family. It was these pipareddi, wrapped in gold ribbon, given to me by Pasquale Sampino that first captured my imagination in the Vucciria market of Palermo.
